— UWW Franconia College

Franconia College From Main Street, Open in 1963

Franconia College was a small experimental liberal arts college in the White Mountains of New Hampshire that embraced the UWW model in the early 70’s. It opened in 1963 on the site of the Forest Hills Hotel on Agassiz Road, began offering BA’s in 1965, and closed in 1978, after years of declining enrollment and increasing financial difficulties.  It was distinguished by its leadership, including Leon Botstein, then the youngest college president in the country, at 23.  He was succeeded by Ira Goldenberg, who founded the Franconia Regional External Program, which he took to New Hampshire College when Franconia ceased operations.
