Origins

The Union for Experimenting Colleges and Universities (UECU), established in 1964, was a nationwide, degree-granting institution offering programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The UECU was a consortium of institutions committed to research and experimentation in higher education.

The Union’s primary mission was as a force for change in higher education. The Union sponsored the creation of Change magazine. It assisted in the development of colleges for special populations. The Union’s successful development and execution of innovative baccalaureate programs, called University Without Walls, has demonstrably influenced other institutions to develop their own alternatives, many of which are based in part on The Union design.
